Why were U.S. base military stores originally called "PX"?
Correct answer: Named after "Post Exchange"

I once drove my ambulance with no windows in the rain on dirt roads across our artillery practice range behind a tank platoon. The base had one of the best PXs in all Germany. when I got there is was covered in mud. The guy at the door wouldn't let me in. He ordered me to get cleaned up first. of course that was impossible but fortunately a Major came by and explained the PX existed for especially for filthy combat troops. He escorted through the doors and gave orders to allow me anywhere. I just wsntd a camera.

OutlawAristocrat6685,
I know this well being an Air Force Brat. Iโm 65 years old and even after being an Air Force wife I still like being and calling myself an AF brat.
You are so right about not having to pay taxes in either the commissary or BX. We were spoiled ๐

Joan

Can civilians shop at the BX? I was living in Japan and thought if I befriended someone on base they could sneak me in. The food in Japan was awful and I was getting desperate.

Gin
When we were with my parents going to the base, the grocery store was called the Commissary, and the other store with clothes and goods was called the PX, at least that's what my parents called them.

Brian
Itโs called the MCX at Marine bases.
