The island of Peurto Rico was named by mistake. The island was supposed to be named San Juan and the city of San Juan was to be named Puerto Rico (rich port). There was apparently a mistake when the original maps were created but it was never changed.

I lived there for 6 months...when my ex-Husband was in the Navy....Our oldest Son was born there...we lived Ceiba, but visited San Jaun frequently!!

beasticall, I am from Puerto Rico and you are right, we (PR) are a country, a nation culturally diferent than US, as I mentioned in other comments, and most importantly we feel that way. The relationship with US is a legal and political one, as a territory, but we don't live or feel like the american people from USA. Culturally and emotionally we are a whole other country.

Player #10133590, You are wrong! Boricua is a demonym or gentilic, meaning "the people from Boriquen" which in turn was the original taino name of the Island. Later, in colonization times, it was modified from Boriquen to Borinquen, which now is the poetic and lovingly way the island is called by, therefore all its people call ourselves and between us boricuas as a way of show our pride and love for being puerto ricans. I am Puerto Rican and know what I'm talking about. That explain the phrase: ¡Yo soy boricua pa que tu lo sepas!

My first Spanish teacher in high school was Puerto Rican. Spanish is so much harder in college though! I love learning about other cultures and countries! Diversity can be a beautiful thing!!🙂🥰

That’s where my son lives rn with his gf and their son . . San Juan is a beautiful city. And the weather is always about 80° which would be SO nice rn bc we’re about to get more snow tomorrow March 1st, 2023 here in Minnesota and we have such huch piles that it’s hard to see if any cars are coming
