Bank of Italy, later renamed Bank of America, financially survived the earthquake by hiding the gold in garbage truck and driving it safely out of the city. The bank owner returned to North Beach and began making loans, on a handshake basis, so people could rebuild.

I have read that opera singer Enrico Caruso was in S.F. during the earthquake and afterwards vowed to never set foot there again and never visited the city again.

There were a lot of fires after the 1906 quake because almost all of the buildings were made of wood. Also, it is because of that quake that Bank of America ended up being such a huge company.

@C_Santoro I hadn't heard about the Bank of America connection but it makes sense given that it was originally HQ'd in San Francisco - Originally called Bank of Italy as I'm sure you know.

We had a slight tremor on the East Coast about 8 years ago. Can't imagine what a full force quake is like. Sure you see the after effects in pictures and the news but to be in the middle of one and experience all that horror.

C_Santoro, the quake shattered most of the water mains, so there was no way to contain the fires. Army engineers from the Presidio knew that explosives could be used to fight fire, but their training wasn't up to the task, and they tended to do more harm than good.
