I knew this as my dad drove a '64 convertible Continental with suicide doors. He had it during the 60's-70's, white with black leather upholstery.

My husband always called them suicide doors, so I knew the answer, but my reasoning is different. If you are parked along the curb and open the door on the driver's side, someone driving in the slow lane can hit the door and close it on you. I like your explanation better. Celebrities, president's, kings and queens, etc., use them as it I s much more graceful to get out of the car that way.

Merry, I think I may have seen perhaps one or two. We lived in the city, but Cadillacs seemed to be the preferred luxury ride. I don't think I'd ever heard or noticed in pictures that the fateful JFK limo had suicide doors.

I was thinking both front & rear doors were "suicide," but on the Lincoln at least, only the rear doors were rear hinged. From a somewhat earlier era, "Suicide Blonde" from do it yourself hair coloring, i.e. "Dyed by her own hand."

LillySparrow, I think it probably depended on where you lived. Rural, and low income areas they were not seen much. They were very expensive. I saw them because our family doctor, who still made house calls owned a couple and I was a heart patient at age 8. Later, my older brother, also a doctor, gave me a power blue two door 67 Lincoln. After that, I drove Town Cars exclusively, and they were my kids first cars, for safety. Lincoln drive trains with proper maintenance can and have lasted for a Million miles with only minor repairs!

Reba, mostly for presidential limousines and limousines for the rich and famous. I was born in ‘58 and I saw the Kennedy assassination with my family on the tv. It was a sad day for the world that day.

BrainTek , fair point, but maybe they're thinking if the car's moving fast enough, the wind would tend to open the suicide door wider, where it might help push a normal door closed. I'm just guessing.

either way of the door swings open wouldn't you still have to lean out of the vehicle to open it in some way
