I grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee when it was still very rural. Horses, apple orchards, farms, dairy cows. All built up now. The area was originally settled by mostly German, Norwegian and Polish immigrants with matching restaurant cuisine. But what I loved a lot was the rich Native American heritage. Many of the city names are tribal names. We also had a family cottage in northern Wisconsin which I loved while growing up. Good fishing. The people are very earthy and friendly.
