KatWOhler, John Wayne was a heavy smoker, as were most people of his era. His lung cancer was caused by smoking. Thank God that the Surgeon General came out in the early '60's and said that smoking causes cancer. Both of my parents were smokers (mom - 1 pack a day; dad - 2 packs a day). Mom immediately quit and dad quit a year later. At that time they were in their mid-late fifties. Dad lived to be 90 and mom lived to be 96. Others of that era that didn't quit died of cancer.
