WaldoLydeker, He was denied entry to the military because of a bad shoulder. He always had mixed emotions about doing military films for that exact reason.

BADSANTA0059, Sure we will! I believe in the resurrection that was promised by God. And when God makes a promise, He's sure 2 keep it! Read about it at John 5:28. The resurrection will be coming sooner than u think. I just hope and pray that John Wayne will be in his memory. Until then, RIP Duke. I remember just as well when he died. My mom loved John Wayne, too. She organized a bicycle parade up in Columbus, IN 4 several.of us kids. In honor of the Dukes passing.

Dennis
DarkMaitri, true Americans, our ancestors did not come from India

Terry
I have every John Wayne movie ever put out!!

Judy, and sadly he was an alcoholic. Just shows everybody has their demons to fight. He was still a great man and a patriot. His speech of the greatness of America was wonderful when we had been in the midst of protests over Vietnam, was strong and sincere and much needed.

ROSEBUD
kronik, Jimmy Stewart. was another great actor but more than that, a great human being.

Emmaline, my dad died from complications from amputation (his left leg) then they gave him morphine of which he was allergic to. He switched his machines off and died 5 minutes later. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered over North Island Naval Air Station. He was 66. My mom died when she was 95. She died of leukemia. She was diagnosed in her 90’s and refused treatment because she said she had lived her lived her life. She had her kids, she married her soulmate, and she traveled around the world.

Sherri, He also had a couple of crime-dramas -- "McQ" and "Brannigan". Those got negative reviews, but so what-- It was worth DVR'ing those films off of the "Movies!" Channel, just for curiosity's sake.

DaniM
My favorite John Wayne movie was The Cowboys.

Hunter424
There is a museum dedicated to him in Fort Worth. It's run by his son and has lots of cool props and letters from his career.

Hunter424
I love his movies, and I always watch them with my grandfather. It is always fun to watch them, even for the 20th time.

While touring Madison County coveted bridges, my cousin and I happened on Winterset, which is the birthplace of The Duke. There is a statue of him in front of the museum. You can tour his house too, but it was closed when we were there.

His final film, The Shootist, is a study of a gunfighter dying of cancer. It is a heartbreaking case of life imitating art, and a beautiful movie.

Connie
When JW learned that a hit was put out on him, he did not wuss or cry, nor did he tell his family, he handled it.

Renee
KatWOhler, that is horrible! I hope they chose that spot to film without knowing the dangers…

Patty
KatWOhler, I read this.

Emmaline
KatWOhler, John Wayne was a heavy smoker, as were most people of his era. His lung cancer was caused by smoking. Thank God that the Surgeon General came out in the early '60's and said that smoking causes cancer. Both of my parents were smokers (mom - 1 pack a day; dad - 2 packs a day). Mom immediately quit and dad quit a year later. At that time they were in their mid-late fifties. Dad lived to be 90 and mom lived to be 96. Others of that era that didn't quit died of cancer.

Heather
Now this is something. Absolute greatness. To persevere, pursue, and push through all of that, Wow. And the moment with his son…..goodness!
