It's the Moon's gravity that causes the tides. Also, the speed is a thousand miles an hour at the equator. If you were standing directly over the axis (north pole), you would just turn in a circle. Interestingly, the atmosphere travels with us meaning that if could suddenly find yourself stable relative to the Earth at the equator, the wind would hit you at a thousand miles per hour.

Steven in UK 🇬🇧, I completely understand why you don't understand, it's a relatively in-depth explanation. It's pretty simple: things all attract each other. Bigger things attract more, whereas smaller things attract less. For example, the Earth is attracted to the Sun quite a lot, as the sun is very large.
