Actually the Roman empire continued in the east for centuries longer. For the avoidance of confusion this question should specifically mention the western Roman empire.

This answer has been over-simplified. Not so much a fall, the decline of the western Roman Empire was gradual. It continued to function into the early 500s. Another major contribution to it's decline was the pilfering of money making its way back from the provinces to Rome. As a result, there was not enough money to pay soldiers to defend the borders
