I grew up in coastal NC and encountered a fair few. Most I’ve seen were about 3 to 4 feet; but the biggest I’ve seen was as long as I am tall (about 6 feet). Quite cranky; in my experience they only strike humans out of instinct. I’ve never known one to go out of its way for humans.
A friend of mine did get bit in the arm once (we were about 12 or 13 at the time). We were able to get him to a hospital within a couple of hours. Didn’t lose the arm, but it was swollen and discolored for over a month. He couldn’t hardly move or use it for over a week.
