In which Italian city did Romeo and Juliet live?
Correct answer: Verona
WaldoLydeker
Shakespeare did not mention anything about a balcony in the play. Interpretations through the years have included it in the scene so now it is part of the vernacular

WaldoLydeker, Quite! he wrote... What light the yonder window. beams?. It is the east and Juliet is the sun. No balcony at all.

munchkin1300, of course not. It's based mostly on the Greek story of Pyramus and Thisbe. It's how a story is reworked that makes it new.
Scotti
WaldoLydeker, the minimal stage direction notes Shakespeare used said "enter Juliet aloft," if I'm not mistaken. Since the Globe had a balcony above the stage, it is assumed that Juliet would have leaned out there, as if it was her window. Romeo whispers about her being above his head like an angel..
