DoctorAnn2000, the only difference is thickness and the way it's produced spider's silk is much stronger than a silkworm, silkworms produce a one mile length of silk in their cocoon which is why it's harvested so often, a spider doesn't produce nearly enough for any type of production of clothing but is very useful in the medical field.. it makes great sutures n I read somewhere in the near future will be used to help burn victims

If you are cut...for lack of anything else...you can put a spider web on a wound to stop the bleeding.

Might also be worth mentioning silk's high tensile strength and perhaps even adding the different types of spider silk, along with the species which creates the silk with the highest tensile strength. Just a suggestion.

There was a coat or cloak made from spider silk on exhibition at the V&A museum (Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the museum of arts, crafts and design) a few years ago. “‘Milking’” the spiders' silk was an incredibly laborious process and took several years. If I remember correctly, each thread was made from 30 strands of silk and the thicker, decorative threads were made from over ten threads! The coat looked amazing and, surprisingly, had a red gold appearance (it wasn't dyed). The spiders were collected every morning from many trees and the species was native to Madagascar. Spiders fall into three general categories: hunting, jumping and web spinning. They produce three distinct kinds of silk, one coarse, for strength and structure, one fine, used to locate prey through the transmitted vibrations and one sticky that traps the prey. Spider silk is an incredible material, about 50 times as strong as steel and much more elastic. Producing artificial silk is the goal of a good deal of research and would have many applications.
