Harry Houdini used to put cold water in his bathtub and add a lot of ice. He would immerse himself and suffer the cold. He was conditioning his body for an upcoming escape from a chained chest which was pushed into an ice covered river in New York. They cut a hole in the ice for stunt. It almost ended in disaster because, after he had gotten out of the locked chest, the current had carried him downstream. He had to swim up underneath the ice to find tiny pockets of air, finally making it back to the hole so he could climb out.
