What does "gelato" mean?

Gelato and ice cream are different. Ice cream has a higher ratio of cream to milk. As it has a lower fat content, gelato needs to be served at higher temperature than ice cream otherwise it would be rock solid.

The name may not mean delicious, but gelato is amazingly delicious!

So how did they freeze things in the 16th century?
