What was the original name of Hawaii?

Maybe the original European or English name, but most definitely not THE original name for the islands. I'm sure the people who were living there had a name that they were already using!

I sincerely doubt that the native Hawaiians ever called home the Sandwich Islands before the arrival of Cook. So that was not the “original” name.

Idaho has a county in the southwest corner, by Oregon, named Owyhee, the history is they wanted to name it Hawaii, but sounded it out as Owyhee. It has beautiful rhyolite canyons, where they used to find thundereggs.

And Captain Cook was killed there by the natives.

I AM GLAD THAT THEY ARE NO LONGER THE SANDWICH ISLANDS. THE 7 ISLANDS ARE ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL. I USED TO LIVE THERE A LONG TIME AGO. AND IF YOU HAVE EVER SEEN THEM IN PERSON I THINK YOU WOULD AGREE THAT IT WOULD BE THE BIGGEST INSULT TO CALL THEM " THE SANDWICH ISLANDS". THANK YOU GOD FOR HAWAII !!!!

While that is a name that was used historically, it is not the original name. Those islands had a name before Captain Cook arrived.
