Roland was a soldier of Charlemagne a Mediaeval French king who fought a tear guard action for Charlesmagnes army . I believe it was a pass called Roncesvalles . With Durendal he wrought terrible devastation on the Moors but was killed in the battle . He ranks next to Joan of Arc as a French hero
