Diver Dan, he thought he was a major help in getting Garfield elected and should have been rewarded with a consular post but wasn't.

Heartland Old Guy, What is interesting is that Garfield ran against the "spoils system" and felt no obligation to reward Giuteau. We need that attitude in Washington today. "Drain the swamp" so to speak.

Guiteau may have shot. him but his doctors killed him. This was before the importance of a sterile field was known and they stuck their fingers in the wound. A lot. Garfield died from sepsis, had the bullet been left alone he likely would have lived.

RushMama2112, they did. He died in my hometown. A railroad was built from RR station to a cottage by the beach where he died. Only thing letting you know now is a plaque. Prime real estate you know.
