topcat323322, It definitely is. I, for one, am glad that we don't just vote popularly, or we'd all be driven by the screwy politics of states like California and New York.

Tagyhag, we are not and never were a true democracy. The US is a form of democracy called a modified Republic. In the pledge of allegiance, it states "and for the Republic, for which it stand..."

Bintheredunthat, Agreed. A Democracy means that the one with the most votes wins, that's not the case in the USA, therefore it is not a Democracy.

nimblemoon, because as a candidate you could just look to please a few larger states at the expense of every other state and become President. This prevents that from happening.

Whenever Democrats get their candidate in office our electoral college is just fine. Once a Republican is voted in bellyaching ensues.

popular vote isn't about States, it's about the people choosing their leader. I don't think votes for federal elections should be counted until everyone has voted. the election is over before Hawaii and the West coast have voted.

do yourselves a favor. research the electoral college on your own. then research how pure democracies have turned out in the past. that is all.

FunkyMonkey, Hillary lost because she was a horrible candidate. In my opinion, the US needs a third party to better address the humanitarian issues beloved by the Democrats, while still encompassing the fiscal concerns so favored by the Republicans.

Bintheredunthat, millitary and some other absentee votes are only a formality. the counting is announced before even beginning the ones that are late for whatever (legal) reason. What a joke!

Maybe there's a better way. Otherwise, we wind up with a president who could barely articulate his policies to a room full of third graders. "You don't negotiate with terrorists!" Sometimes, the system works, i.e. Reagan, Bush(Sr. & Jr.). Heck, even Obama was better.

toadicusrex, I concur, although the way things are going nowadays one wonders if anyone has any idea how to fairly and adequately run an election.

I wish they’d eliminate the Electoral College all together. In today’s world it’s no longer useful or relevant. It’s just a waste of time and money, not to mention corruption.

it is necessary. and anyone that thinks otherwise thinks that the whole country should be governed by California. which is basically what would happen if they took away the electoral college

it is setup so all states in the union have a say. other wise with such a vast land in weather, resources, and production. only 319 miles of dense population would make decisions for the entire USA.
