Player Say what!?, When I was in nursing school, my first day in the labor and delivery department I was chosen to observe a delivery. It was a twelve year old girl having her baby. She had her teddy bear with her throughout the delivery. Her mother was going to raise the child. This was in the early 1980s and I have often wondered if the man who impregnated this child was prosecuted or protected. I never worked in L and D nor wanted to after this experience. The people in this country that think molestation of children is just fine are mentally deranged. How can adults be of right minds that believe stealing a child's childhood through Rape is acceptable?

tawiyela12, was hard then to be a woman. HAVE to attach yourself to a man and hope he doesn't beat you or abandon you. Let us all remember the old times were rotten especially for women you had few choices if your luck ran out you literally might die of starvation.

DNA has ABSOLUTELY proven this story to be true. Sally was the half-sister of Jefferson's wife. Sally was "gifted" to her upon marrying Jefferson.

Poopsy1958, girls got married MUCH earlier then. Try reading some Dickens. Not to condone it but the late 1700s were VERY different from now. Men had wives die in childbirth a LOT. Survival was not assured anyone.

Taranchalanche, He didn't marry her, he molested her, let's not try to make it seem as if it were a legit love affair. Dirty ole geezer

Dispicable. 14, remained a servant, victimized same way as her mother, life sentence with no way out. SO thankful to live today. When people talk about "the good ole days", I always wonder if they are mental. Sick powerful people throughout history in every country preying on the innocent and powerless. We may have far to go but we are so much better than any time in history.

johnny, I don't believe that anyone "can't fight the urge." You're either an adult in control of your own behavior or a child in an adult body, aka sociopath.

ConditionalRainfall3, he didn't marry he was married to her half sister(dad raped Sally's mom ) plus it was illegal for whites to marry blacks no matter the age and they definitely wasn't going to marry their slave

whoopjay, Studies show 94% of men have thoughts of underage women. Majority deny it but polygraphs show that they lie. It's called the wolf's trait. Some leave it as a fantasy and never follow through. While others can't fight the urges. And in the state of being a slave, she probably gave in willingly. 🤔

Jacqui, You’re holding up 200+ year old events to today’s standards. As sickening as it is, she was legal property. These were people who believed that even in the eyes of God, slavery was right. The world is slowly but surely changing for the better.

Alexandra Kendall, agreed. If people would stop to read the facts they mught better understand the culture back then. Both in USA and SA, when the families were trekking inland, incest was very prevalent.

So President Jefferson was a child molester, that’s so sickening to thing someone with such power could get away with this. And it was probably acceptable back then. Poor girl, he obviously didn’t love her or he would’ve freed her. And to allow your own kids to be slaves too. Is disgraceful. So sad😢

Player Say what!?, this is not accurate. Sally Hemings was never freed. Jefferson freed only 2 slaves during his lifetime and 5 more in his will (out of hundreds). Why would you possibly assume a relationship between a master and his slave was "loving" and "mutual"? Please educate yourself about chattel slavery

Alexandra Kendall, Henry’s father was Edmund Tudor who was around 24 and died before Henry was born. Back in that time, many marriages occurred at a young age for both males and females, often for political reasons. This was especially true for girls who had no say in who or when they married. Henry’s mother was Lady Margaret Beaufort and she is believe to have been 12 when she married Edmund Tudor (not her first marriage) and 13 when she gave birth to Henry. Her exact year of birth is unknown.
