What was the "Gimli Glider"?

MalibuMarlie, Did not know anyone else who ever knew where Gimli was never mind as their home town. Remember that story well. The refueling people learnt quickly that a liter in not the same as a gallon...a lot smaller !

Wow! Gimli is my hometown. Tiny population!

Was happy to see this question, but the explanation really should have included a note about WHY it ran out of fuel, which was a mistake made when transitioning from imperial to metric measurement.
