No one is more pretentious about wines than Americans. I was in Italy once and ordered a glass of mer-low (like American say it), but the waitress didn’t know what I was saying at first. Then comprehension dawned on her and she said “mer-lot”; as we would say in ham-MER ; and lot, as we would say in give me a LOT. It was eye-opening for me to realize how pretentious we are!
