"Mile" actually comes from the Latin "mille", which means one thousand. If you step off 1,000 paces (two steps per pace) and you are a typical Roman soldier (shorter than a contemporary man) you have walked approximately 5,280 feet. A thousand paces was a standard measurement of distance for the Roman army.
