My father fought in Europe. After VE day he, like others, were asked if he would go to the Pacific. He signed up, but the Americans said they had it under control. So most did not go.

While Truman was probably right in his thinking, no Americans in their homeland had been invaded , shelled or bombed , so maybe Europeans and the British can be forgiven for their unbridled joy at that time. My RAF father had been flying over Germany but did indeed then go to India to continue the fight.

My grandfather was a Japanese POW in Borneo and was murdered by them after they had surrendered. He was in Sandakan prison and they forced the POW's on a death march. Any POW's that could not walk were murdered where they fell. The POW's were mostly British and Australian troops captured in the fall of Singapore. Only 6 survived out of several thousand.
