J, I can't think of another that turned out better. I know, what about, "The Shining?" The truth is that fans of the book, including Stephen King, don't like Stanley Kubrick's adaptation because he altered the nature of the character of Jack, who is the soul of the book. He also completely changed the ending. Stephen King calls it, "A big beautiful Cadillac with no engine." I think Shawshank Redemption is the very best movie adaptation of a Stephen King book.

King tells a story about an older lady in FL who recognized him and berated him for his horror books, saying he should write something like "that Shawshank story." He tried to tell her but she wouldn't hear it... :D
