Very brave men to whom the whole world owes a great debt of gratitude. Lord only knows what our world would be like if the Axis powers had won WW2. The freedom that most of us have would be nonexistent.

Delan1947, so right. New analysis shows the numbers are much higher, closer to 10,000 on the allied side, and at least that many on the axis side. But that was just the initial invasion on the five beaches. Most analysis doesn't even mention the number of French civilians that lost their lives in the bombing campaign 15,000 to 20,000). Also lost were numerous allied naval craft and air craft. It is hard to breakdown because the Battle of Normandy which was begun with the D-Day invasion and lasted over six weeks.

Player #8008224gato, Was meant to be 5 June but the good ol Channel weather made Ike wait a day. A brilliant operation, especially the counter intelligence component that totally bamboozled Hitler.

Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword. When I saw "The Longest Day" in the exclusive opening run at Los Angeles' Carthay Circle Theater, now gone, they continued the custom of selling accompanying glossy magazine-like "programs". I spent my buck (a lot then), and was disappointed, having bought programs at other big premieres, "Ben-Hur", et al, black-n-white photos just didn't cut it. But I did learn the names of the 5 landing sectors which I remember to this day over 50 years later.

RedSeaDiver69, for all it's misery, the 2nd World War served a great purpose. It weakened the European colonial powers and helped close to a 100 countries gain freedom from their despotic European rulers. So in a way, the 2nd WW actually helped multiple countries gain their freedom.

Sonicgirl, I really don't blame some of the US troops for shooting Germans who tried to surrender ( if that did happen ) after the Germans had killed thousands of US guys. The US soldiers must have been mad with anger when they finally got to the top of the cliffs.

Supergirl, I don't think people really gloss over the fact that it was a violent and messy operation. But it was war, any war is bloody. it is unfortunate but from the beginning of time any battle in history is bloody and gruesome. no way around it until every nation, religion, or whatever learns to live peacefully with one another. at least in my lifetime I don't think its gonna happen. someone is always gonna have a beef with someone else.

One of my grandfather's was German, and he said a was an amazing sight to see. Before withdrawing , his MG 42 Maschine Gun crew shot maybe over one hundred US Soldiers on Omaha beach. He said , that most of his section were sick, because that was the first time they had ever fired their Guns in Anger. War is a totally horrible thing, Maybe we should as humans think a bit more of what we do.
