I live in MN and remember our parents taking us kids to the headwaters of the Mississippi river up north of the cities. We splashed around to our hearts content. Jumped from rock to rock trying not to fall off those slippery things. Great memories.

Iโ€™ve swam in the headwaters of the Mississippi River at lake itasca. A few years back the exact place I swam was on the cover of National Geographic.

The origin of this mighty waterway is marked by stepping stones across water about 20 ft. wide and perhaps a ft deep in Itasca State Park in "Up North" Minnesota. Henry Schoolcraft is known to be the 1st nonnative/Ojibwe to behold the source. And yes the lake is known as Itasca too. Wild rice grows near this area. It's harvested in the traditional manner by Ojibwe tribal members of the Leech lake band usually and parched a as has been done for millennia Please Googlek up the website for informationon

You say 'the widest part of the river' but define this particular partt as a lake. I feel this is slightly misleading. I don't care about the points, only accuracy of the questions..
