Our US flag is a history lesson: the 13 stripes represent our original 13 colonies, and the 50 stars represent our 50 states today.
Whenever new states are added, the field of stars is redesigned to represent the current number of states. The last time this happened was in 1959, when Alaska and Hawaii became states, and the 48 stars became 50.
