River, The American Colonization Society was an anti-slavery organization that believed that enslaved people who were freed should be returned to Africa. Beginning in 1822, during the Presidency of James Monroe, they began sending these people, many of whom were bought by the Society, back to Western Africa where they founded the nation of Liberia. 🇱🇷 They named the capital Monrovia after James Monroe. It was a noble gesture for the time that has a much longer story than can be told here.

BlueEyedAlien, thank you so much for that explanation! The info provided by the game didn’t explain why an African country would name their capital after an American president.

Ok, interesting, but why would they want to name their capital after U.S. President James Monroe? I'm more curious about that trivia.
