This picture doesn't do the whole complex justice. I found it a more interesting site to visit than nearby Taj Mahal.

richa thakur jha, Qutub Minar was built way back than mughals ever existed. It was built during the reign of Qutub ud din aibak of slave dynasty and completed by Iltutmish. Around 1193. There is no proof in record that it used to be a tower of vishnu. It was built very gradually and existed as one storey for many years. The final touches were done by British. There was no hand of Mughals in Qutub Minar nor there is proof of it being a structure pertaining Hindu deities. The writings on Qutub Minar are in Arabic language.

I lived in India for six months, in Madras, now known as Chani. I travelled a lot, but as a single woman travelling alone, it was easier in the south, places like Kerala (beautiful) and Pondicherry, I found the North too hard to travel through, too many beggars, sexual harassment and pollution.

Gauri, - I would like to comment that it may have been a tower devoted to Lord Vishnu as a temple is built alongwith the minar within the premises in that period.

The word "minaret" itself fascinates me, as if they only exist in fairy tales and legends.
