An Oscar record, of sorts, was created when he got his Oscar for “Limelight” 20 years after the film came out. Chaplin was a persona non grata in the U.S. in 1952 and the film was not shown in Los Angeles, an Academy requirement. Unfortunately, the other two sharing the honor were already dead and frail 83 year-old Charlie didn’t attend. He’d made the trip the year before to get an honorary Oscar which probably prompted the Hollywood geniuses to release the film in L.A. and give him another Oscar. Great bookends! At the first Oscar presentation ever, he received an Oscar in a class by himself. The Academy said no one else could compete at his level. So, he got the very first Honorary Oscar. And a few years before his death, he got 2 more! By then, the other 3 founders of United Artists had also gone to the great studio in the sky: Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith.

Chaplin was a brilliant talent. I don't like the fact that he preferred young girls over a bit more mature women. "Gold Rush" was my favorite Chaplin silent.
