monochrome: mono from the Hellenic word Μονό(ς) which means single/one and chrome from Hellenic word Χρώμα which means colour!

:[Chris1981]:, Hmm I think the clue is the fact that chrome also derives from Greek ergo mono in this context is from the Greek meaning one.

All of the pictures taken when I was growing up were in black & white. Either cameras for colored pictures were available to the public or they were too expensive for my family to afford.

All in all, isn't there an exception to every rule?!!?? That's what can make life, or a simple question, confusing! lol
CrazzyGirl
TK & Noel, Partially correct. In Art, relative to Print, you are right. However, when the colors are produced by Light, it is the opposite - White is the Combination of ALL Light Colors and Black is the Absence of Any Color. (As noted in my previous answer, I have the ability to be wrong! lol)
CrazzyGirl
Holly, I'm thinking that "Kodachrome" is a brand of color film made by Kodak.
CrazzyGirl
MorganRae, It depends on the context - PRINT or LIGHT. In print, all colors create Black, and no color creates White. Whereas in the context of LIGHT, it is the opposite. All colors create White, and when there is no color, you see Black. (I could have this backward - no one has ever accused me of being well-balanced! lol)

Marjona , good question(cuz I'm wondering the same thing) I think one of them is considered absence of color (white?) and the other is all colors ¿?? I hope someone answers you
Tony
But aren't black and white two different colors? So why is it mono?
Marjona
I understand that this type of phograph produced one way image that without color. it made any type of white blach pictures

And in fashion this word is synonymous with dressing in one color . . . A monochromatic outfit can be varying shades of the same color. In other words, if your outfit is camel, the colors can be a little different but the hues must complement each other. It could be all blue (or shades of blue), all green (or shades of green), or even all shades of gray. I love it
