My pet peeve is when people use sloppy sentence construction and the actual meaning gets obscured or dubious. And it has been happening more frequently!

Anna Lane, no, paints are not the same as pintos. Paints apply to the Quarter Horse breed. Pinto is a pattern found in many breeds.

I missed this but only because how they framed the question. when I read what was the last name, I thought they meant a last name like Smith in John Smith. I knew Tonto horses name was scout but I thought they added a last name to it. Shows you how smart I am.🥴

They're both color designations. Palomino designates a golden/yellow body coat with a lighter color (white or flaxen) mane and tail. Pinto is any base color coat, usually black or chestnut/sorrel, less often bay, sometimes grey, with big white areas. These are not breeds, only color or color pattern names.

The difference between Pinto & Paint is that only horses with Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred lineage can be registered as a Paint. I believe any breed or mixed breed with the proper coat color can be registered Pinto. We once had a Paint that had Man O War in his pedigree.
