Who was the Roman Emperor that built a wall across northern Britainnia in the second century?
Correct answer: Hadrian

Stobor
It was built due to the Roman army being unable to conquer the Picts. The Picts would get naked, paint themselves blue and run screaming from the trees to attack the orderly columns of the centuries and it scared the Romans half way to death.

Roonbergski
The Romans conquered three quarters off brittania, but not Caladonia otherwise now known as Scotland. FREEDOM.

BlueEyedAlien
The Romans went north, took one looked at the Picts, and said, “Let’s build the wall right here.”

Phadraiga,
Modern cities where?
Here in the UK, there are dozens of walled cities and towns, but all of them are Roman or Medieval.
Some are well preserved like Chester and York, you can walk along the tops of them, but some have practically vanished, like Hastings and Dover, there are only below ground-level foundations left.

Castra
Player #125843019,
Mari does mean Picts.
That's the name given to those wild tribes who lived in what is now Scotland.

tia
As a Brit, we were taught a song about Hadrian and his wall. Plus did a project about it. Quite common for people to walk it as part of their bucket list...

antzuzu
They say we Americans are ignorant of world history- specifically European. But I knew Hadrian's Wall 😁

Player #33612647, you would no be able to climb over the wall unless you had a set of ladders with you, or there where foot holes in the wall as it was 12 to 15 feet high.

Player #125843019
Mari, do you mean picts or pigs

arohanui
Player #33612647, it was used also for controlling entry and exit of goods. they had customs checkpoints in the wall

If I had a time machine, I would go visit his private villa at it's prime. You would have a hard time getting me to leave the extensive gardens he built.

Shariff
Player #33612647, they wanted to signify the end of the world. I know game of thrones is fiction but I find it very accurate

Player #33612647
Why make a wall that is very easy to get over? And even hide behind?

Stobor, screaming “Get out the wode!”

Player #27643412
Mari, not necessarily so, the Picts were known for doing lightening raids on the Roman settlements, they had a turn over of troops & officers as they were always on alert, as the Picts were the first documented users of guerrilla tactics..
