Ronald Reagan was not the best president. He wanted ketchup as a vegetable on the school lunch programs and that was shot down luckily. He had all the mental institutions closed, that's one of the reasons there are so many homeless. But that's starting to turn around thankfully.

JumpingPirate93148, As an RN, I worked a portion of a long career in mental health. As soon as the state mental hospitals closed we almost immediately saw a huge change. Instead of primarily seeing patients who were acutely ill, we began seeing folks with chronic, complex illness. They were often non-compliant with medication or treatment plans (due to their illness.) These people were so ill that they could not care for themselves and were commonly brought to our facility by the police. It is certainly true that the state mental health facilities needed important changes but they never should have been closed. It wasn’t fair to hospitalized patients as they could not get the care they needed as the staff was spending most of the time dealing with challenging and, not infrequently, violent behavior. Now, many of these people live in the streets and are in constant danger.

JumpingPirate93148, Closing the mental institution wasn't his idea. It was signed into law before he took office. Blame the civil rights folks who pushed this.

SALT was the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. That was about limiting nuclear arms proliferation. Reagan's talks were about actually reducing weapons stockpiles.

cinbad4321, because we got rid of those 'institutions' in the 60's. Our biggest mental health facilities are currently in our prison systems.

I was working for a defense contractor at the time of the INF Treaty. This company hadn't built missiles since the 1960s but was still subject to inspections by the Soviets under the terms of the treaty. we had mock inspections to prepare but never an actual one.
