Moonlight , No kidding. it's no surprise that the dictatorship of the Catholic church persecuted this brilliant scientist but that it was never allowed to be made known. I find it amazing that they remain so powerful.

Why, then, was Copernicus not similarly prosecuted by the Catholic Church? The idea of heliocentrism was nothing new. The difference was that Copernicus provided proofs for his theory, whereas Galileo posited a theory as fact without scientific method. The Catholic Church was actually on the side of science in the Galileo affair!

samwisegamchi, Actually Galileo and Kepler together formulated the first proof of the heliocentric model, though they technically cheated anyway by ignoring the obviously elliptical nature of orbits, which they couldn't explain until Newton properly defined gravity.

that question is complete misinformation. first of all, galileo was definitely NOT the first person to propose the heleocentric system and to be shut down. there were MANY others who stated it to be truth first. people like kepler and aristarchus were rejected on the bases of lack of facts supporting there cases. and galileo never proved heleocentricity to be true. there is so much more that could be said in thier defense. so before you comment on something, try looking it up first and inform yourself.
