Wow! Such a short lifespan... what a shame for such a beautiful animal.

It's amazing how fast they've become urbanised. I live near central London and they're everywhere now. Ten years ago I'd never seen one. I do like foxes and agree that they're beautiful animals, but they have become a bit of a nuisance. Their scent is pretty pungent and unpleasant, they tend to make a lot of mess rummaging through dustbins (I think you call them garbage cans in the USA) and the thing that annoys me the most is the noise they make when mating, which is surprisingly frequent and often wakes me up in the early hours. Still, live and let live and I'd rather have them relatively safe than in the country where they were brutally and viciously hunted, the blood hound tearing them to pieces. Fortunately, fox hunting is now illegal. I had to agree with Oscar Wilde's description of fox hunting: "The unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible".

Unfortunately, due largely to human expansion into their current/former territory most species have very short lifespans. (Not a criticism, just a fact, everywhere beneficial for us due to fresh water, fertile soil etc. wabs also once prime ground for other mammals....

Saint Nine, in this semi-rural part of the New Forest, a vixen took up residence in a hole at the base of a tree. Just across the garden from our back door. She learned to use the cat flap and for weeks I thought I was feeding a very hungry stray cat. Never saw her in the house, she slipped in at night. Clever creatures.

Saint Nine, It seems to me that any wild animal that becomes urbanized is invariably considered a nuisance, even though all they are doing is surviving. Think raccoons, pigeons, rats etc. All perfectly fine animals when in their natural habitats. Unfortunately we have destroyed their natural habitats. Tolerating their ‘nuisances’ is the least we can do.

We have one beautiful red fox who can occassionally be seen between dusk and dawn in our small town. So sorry about their life expectancy!

Wild animals should not be fed by humans. What we eat may not be healthy for the wild animals even though they may eat our scraps. Also, it encourages them the hang around people instead of their natural habitat.

Wild foxes are a Rabies Vector Species (along with coyotes, raccoons, dogs and bats), meaning they can spread Rabies without being symptomatic themselves. It's not advisable to feed or interact with them.

According to National Geographic (of many years ago) some great progress has been made in domesticating foxes. It came out of Russia's attempt to "farm" foxes for fur.

Lionessa, Well sorry to say but that’s mainly due to disreputable pet owners who refuse to spay and neuter their cats (and dogs) and then releasing their overflow into the wild. Unthinkable but unfortunately too true how humans are more detrimental to every other species on the planet they don’t deem as important as themselves. Extinction of so species looming in the near future is proof of our ignorance.
