toothless beachrat, For me in Canada as well, Timbuktu meant somewhere impossibly far away, e.g., "He drove away so fast, he could be in Timbuktu by now."

as a kid growing up in the 60's in Manhattan Beach, CA, when someone would ask "how far away is it"? The answer would be "Timbuktu" to mean that is far away
