Within the human body, what causes diabetic ketoacidosis to occur?
Correct answer: A shortage of insulin

missy189, lets not get too scary. I've had type 1 for 40 years and as long as you are sensible life can be quite normal. I'm not blind, I can walk and I've not lost any limbs. Be positive
missy189
Until you get diabetes, you take for granted that you can eat whatever you want. Diabetes is an awful progressive disease. It can rob you of the ability to walk due to neuropathy (nerve damage) in your legs, see (can cause blindness)and many more scary, painful lifelong problems.

MyLifeMyWay, My niece is brittle diabetic - she was diagnosed as Type 1 when she was 13 & she is now 45. She has had a similar experience to yours - highs that the meter couldn't read to lows now that almost killed her one day when her sugar was 10 in the morning (she didn't respond when her Mom called her, so her Mom went to check on her and had a very tough time getting her to wake up - her Mom knows from many years of experience when she is having a low sugar, so she called 911 while her other daughter started shoving jelly in her sister's mouth - the paramedics when they arrived said that she would have died if her Mom had not gotten her to wake up). A little tip for you - per the paramedics - in case you don't already know, peanut butter is probably the best thing for someone having a low sugar (sugar & protein together in one product). Best to you.

Take diabetes seriously especially if heart disease runs in your family. I'm 38 and am in hospital having had a minor heart a couple of days ago. I used my medication as an excuse to eat whatever I wanted and now I'm paying for it a lot sooner than I thought.

ChampyShaman58890, I have neuropathy and it's nothing nice , so much pain and some people dont believe you can have such pain just (as they say ) from having sugar weather high or low . funny how some people can be .

missy189, no it's not necessarily progressive. 80% of people with NIDDM can achieve normal blood sugars with dietary change. Unfortunately in the west we mostly can't be arsed and expect tablets to sort it out. They may improve things but don't correct the underlying problem.
MyLifeMyWay
missy189, my sugar use to run so high my meter couldn't read in over 600. now I am having such major problems I cant keep my sugars up and bottom out. wow if I only could have known, or could fix it . and I'm only 125 lbs.

pip, quite right. Yes, type 1 diabetes has an enormous impact on your life and lifestyle. But with devices such as continuous glucose monitoring, weighing and measuring carbs, insulin pumps and so on, it is possible - with care and control - to lead a normal life. Of course, many people around the world can’t afford these things, which is devastatingly sad. :( many best wishes to anyone with type 1 and people caring for those with it.

The universities of Toronto & S Alberta teamed up to study effects of herbs on some common illnesses, one being diabetes. Look up the research for specifics. LSS, the herbs worked better for a number of illnesses, incl diabetes. This was some years ago, but advice still hold.
