What is the name of the person who became known as the Buddha?

I first read the story of Siddhartha Gautama in the ninth grade. Looking back, I have to admire my teacher for making this book required reading in the middle of Salt Lake City in the early 70s. I think that, if the Mormon members of the school board had had any idea who "Siddhartha" (the name of the book) was, she probably wouldn't have gotten by with it.
