DownwardDiplomat4, in the 60's when I grew up,we did not have air conditioning. We had screens in the windows and would open them wide and pray for a breeze! Now I am spoiled and pay for ac.

When I was growing up in 50s and 60s we or any family we knew never had AC in the home. Never saw one until the 80s And I come from California.

Appropriate question as I just found out today my A.C. has to be replaced. Can't even be fixed. Here I sit in the humid Midwest in August. I wish Mr. Carrier had invented something that would not break down until after the first snowfall. At least I don't live in the Southwest this time of year.

I live in a semi desert area in California and in summer it gets to over 100 degrees.so air conditioning is a must. we try to keep it down but the energy cost is high.
