craig, It wasn't a letter, but it was in typesets. It was the letters Et, which is 'and' in Latin. Printers referred to it as "and, per se and".

I learned the & was the 27th letter of the alphabet. it was X Y & Z. it's was dropped from the alphabet at some point idk why?
