I live in Venice, built over millions of logging stumps, not thousands, the Basilica on its own holds thousands. All water ways get smelly in Summer due to algae.

we were in Venice several years ago. I can't remember all the details, but the story of the found of Venice goes something like this. Many centuries ago the area was inhibited be several small tribes that were constantly attacking each other. The ones being attacked would flee out to the marshy waters for safety. They would build little islands to stay on until it was safe to return. Over time, the islands became permanent and people settled on them for good.. Hope I'm remembering correctly.

Dalia, Venice's canals are part of the surrounding sea and so must be presumably slightly tidal. When we went in May everything was fine, but I have read that they become rather smelly towards the end of the summer. Venice was a dream to see, but oh the crowds off the visiting cruise ships were horrendous!
