The suffix -trix is added to make a feminine noun from a noun that is traditionally masculine and ends in -or, such as aviator or executor. It comes from Latin. I think the whole idea is outdated. Men are ALL called "Mister" all the time. But women's titles specifically refer to marital status. Why? Why does the guy who mows my yard and the mailman need to know this? The only purpose this serves is to let men know without asking if we are "taken" or "available." It's old-fashioned and really has no place in today's world. You can call me Ms. for the simple reason that it's none of your business.

Lionessa, I agree totally .Although married many years I use the prefix Ms. it is NO other person's business what my marital status is. [ I have been a very Merry Widow for almost 7 yrs ] 😉

Talaith, My issue is with the double standard. I don't care about dating problems. Short of putting a tattoo on their forehead, sleazy married men will always lie about it. The key is not instantly trusting or believing someone new.

Lionessa, It would help instead if men had similar labels and physical indicators such as sindoor or wedding rings to indicate their marital status as it saves embarrassment if you chase them when they are married or are less familiar with them then. Men and women both should equally declare their status as it is customary to treat and address them with different behaviours and politeness. Just sticking to Ms does not address the root of the problem.
