CHRISGER, it is not a guitar, it is an f5 style gibson mandolin used largely in bluegrass. it is not fingerpicked rather played with a flat pick. string tension is too high for fingerstyle. it is tuned the same as a violin, mandola same as a viola. prefix man means hand (rather than bow) is used to sound the strings. the mandolin is descended from the oud and the frets and tuning from the viola de gamba. regards georgef

When I was in the 6th grade our teacher started a mandolin band with about 20 of us(1/2 of our class.) We tried out for the Ted Mack Original Amature Hour. We didn't make it. But it was exciting and a wonderful experience for us.

Fun fact? Instruments that use pairs of strings, like traditional mandolins and as opposed to 6 string guitars or 4 string bass guitars? Use “courses” of strings. So a 12 string guitar has 6 courses of strings that correspond to the standard pitch of strings on a 6 string guitar (some are octaves to each other) and a mandolin has four courses of strings, each pair traditionally tuned like a violin’s four individual strings
