Wow, too many comments to address. As an Ohioan, in school at that time, it was a horrible & frightening tragedy, in very uncertain times. But please, people, at least know the FACTS before you speak! Learn history; don't alter it to suit your own agenda.

trinityregina1, you really should study up before you make such wild claims. At no point in any of the background I found was this said to be ordered by Nixon; even if it had been it is not the president’s job to ensure it is carried out. A sergeant began firing at the students and that is what started it.

Lenny the Clam, I was 18 & clearly remember it. Nixon ordered the national guard was to "disperse the crowd with all force available". the dead girl had, mins before the shooting, placed a flower in the barrel of the rifle that she was killed with. the girl trying to help her, was a runaway from south Florida. no riot, no guns, no fighting amidst the protesters. the order to shoot to kill was Nixon, who had 4 students murdered simply because they disagreed with his policies.

This is the exact reason why the government/LE/military shouldn't be the only ones to have firearms. They can be ordered to kill

WickedCommodore90382, in Chicago during the 1968(?) protests, mayor Daley ordered his police force to "disperse the crowd with whatever means at hand". people were beaten, dragged, kicked and arrested. yrs later a report was issued stating the occurrence, as well as deaths, were avoidable and should have never happened in America. shot. Daley called Nixon afterward and the casualty reports.

Fossil5465, You are so right. I was a sr. in high school living about 50 miles from where it happened. Governor James Rhodes ordered the National Guard, not Nixon. I served in the Ohio National Guard from 1971-1977 and heard several versions of what happens, none that I will repeat here.

PerkyLin, unfortunately cops done it quite often back in the day before the camcorder was released and some good bystander managed to photograph the Rodney King beating and suddenly ppl actually started to believe what ppl had been trying to tell individuals for years prior to that the police were beating and shooting ppl who were trying to follow the orders that were given despite the fact that the cops always use that famous get out of jail free quotes that they were resisting arrest and or I was In fear for my life

Wow, there are far too many comments to address, some with misinformation. Within days of this national disgrace Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young released the song, "Four Dead in Ohio." Don't forget what the students were protesting. Do you have the courage?

I remember that time. So horrible and so sad. How could anyone live with themself knowing they had killed unarmed young people? I was overseas at the time, pregnant with my only child. Must have been 23 years old then.

Kent State in May 1970, was a time in history, when the painful use of police force was used against college students, using their constitutional right for demonstration. Does that sound familiar to May 2020?
