A caul is just a piece of the amniotic sac that surrounds the foetus in utero. During the birth process the amniotic sac tears or ruptures, and sometimes a piece is found adhering to the newborn’s head or another part of its body.

Smithy, Actually it was considered lucky because if the membrane remains intact the baby remains in a germ-free environment through birth. Before modern screening of mom and antiseptic birthing practices babies could get all kinds of nasty diseases on the way out, resulting in blindness, STDs etc.

Player Teresa611, Sometimes the sac emerges intact around the baby, like a water balloon! Happened when my youngest was born. It ruptured only after most of her body was out. Good for baby as her head was less “ squeezed”, and she was in a sterile environment. Still receiving oxygen through the umbellical cord so no problem. Sometimes it’s a tough little membrane to tear off the bay!
