My Dad was in the Navy. We lived in Great Lakes in 1960-64. We lived in Halsey Village, on Yorktown Street. There was a Saratoga Boulevard, I can’t remember any of the other names right now. We moved to Illinois from Kodiak, Alaska. It was much colder in Illinois than where we lived in Alaska, there is the Japanese Current that keeps Kodiak Island from being brutally cold like the rest of Alaska. Good times to be a child.

Player #4265851, they closed the other training centers after the Cold War ended. There's still a Navy base in San Diego though, so if a girl's lucky she can still catch an eyeful of them training on the beach.... ;-)

:(Nancy E):, We lived in Kodiak for 11 yrs of my husband’s Coast guard service 97-2008. The old Navy base was turned over to the CG! It’s the largest CG base in the US. We loved Kodiak! Mostly raised our kids there!

Nutshell, I worked at a nursing home that was next to a large park during the late 70’s . The dinning room faced the park. On weekends in the summer one of my coworkers would come to the front and say “ They’re coming!” And we would all scurry to the dining room for our coffee break and drool over the weekend warriors on their run through the park ( their building was a few doors down from the home)😁

Player #4265851, yeah Congress closed RTCs Orlando and San Diego in their base-closing mania. The base at San Diego is still there but the RTC is gone. I was at Great Lakes when they were starting to prepare to be the only RTC. That's when they told us women would be coming there (long after we graduated, unfortunately 😆).
