What is the largest freshwater lake in the world as measured by surface area?
Correct answer: Lake Superior
Bird Brain 007
Thought it was Lake Baikal. But found that is largest of all fresh water by volume, not surface area.

The Caspian Sea IS a lake, but it's saltwater. Btw, that picture really is of Lake Superior -- Shovel Point cliff on the Minnesota shore.

I live in MN and go to Superior often. So beautiful but freezing cold! We usually do a cold plunge. There's the most beautiful hiking too along it's shoreline with all the tributaries. A really cool lake but also dangerous. Maps of the shipwrecks are insane!

Lake Baikal holds 20% of the world's freshwater however, with about half of the surface area.

I was born and raised on the east side of Lake Superior. "Gitchie Gumee" is her Indigenous name. The sailors were warned about her, that she was possessed, and many ships have been lost with strange stories. This area is considered to be it's own type of Bermuda Triangle.

Wow. No wonder the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. Storms on that lake are powerful as hurricanes.
