What is a person obsessed with working to an unhealthy degree called?

My dad was a workaholic. It all started when he was 8yrs old. He helped his mom support his 10 siblings when their dad abandoned them in the late 30s. He sent his mom in her old age until she died. I noticed that he didn’t feel comfortable unless he was working. He didn’t seem to like relaxing or being on vacation. He didn’t retire until his 70s. Even after that he stayed busy by being a handyman since he had worked in construction before becoming a truck driver. I felt happy that he liked working, but at the same time I felt sorry for him. I was always proud he was my father till the day he died.

I think some folks are missing the point. Loving work is great. Being a workaholic is entirely different. The comparison to alcoholics is apt: we all know the difference between a drinker and an alcoholic. Loving a job, enjoying long hours, using work to get away from problems - these things are all normal. Workaholics can literally kill themselves for a company, and they don’t do it for recognition or money.

Workaholism is a point of contention in the family. There is usually no compromise, and the order of the day is denial.

I love working and I never wanted to stop! I had to because of me having kids and me getting sick! I was a working phene before I got sick though! Workaholic!
