When was the Euro introduced as an accounting currency on the world market?

SQinfoNUTS, the USA will never change to the euro!! too expensive,!!

it's really hard to keep track of all this stuff. The only reason I I knew this was that in early 2000 someone try to pay me $200 they owed me in Euros. It's worth noting that I live in Pennsylvania in the US.
