I always thought it was because they are incisors. "I for short...not sure this answer is correct

I actually paid to have my son's eye teeth removed when he was eighteen as they grew outside his other teeth (owing to small jaw) and made him look like a vampire, not a good look. We have never regretted it and nobody notices that he hasn't got those teeth. The cost was only $800 Australian.
